Introduction to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is located at No. 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. It is 10 kilometers away from the city center and more than 30 kilometers from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. The base covers a total area of 3,570 mu, of which the expanded area accounts for 2,535 mu. It is a world-renowned base for giant panda ex-situ conservation, scientific research and breeding, public education, as well as educational tourism. The core area of the base covers 1,000 mu.
Built on the foundation of Chengdu Zoo’s efforts in the captive breeding, rescue and reproduction of giant pandas, the base established an open laboratory in 1997. In 2019, it received over 9 million Chinese and foreign tourists. On November 17, 2023, the China National Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas was founded on the basis of integrating resources from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.
The base simulates the wild ecological environment of giant pandas through landscape gardening techniques. Its giant panda delivery rooms, breeding areas, scientific research centers and panda hospitals are arranged in an orderly manner, with several luxurious giant panda "villas" scattered among the mountains and forests. The expanded area fully follows the original terrain and landforms, utilizing mountain gullies and streams to form a multi-level mountain valley landscape belt. Based on the giant panda theme, the project is divided into several functional zones. By the end of 2020, the captive giant panda population at the base reached 215, making it the largest artificially bred captive giant panda population in the world. Known as an "Ecological Demonstration Project for Giant Panda Ex-situ Conservation", it is world-famous for protecting and breeding giant pandas, red pandas and other endemic endangered wild animals in China.
In 1995, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was awarded the title of "Global 500 Roll of Honour" by the United Nations Environment Programme. In 2006, it was rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
On July 26, 2025, the torch relay of the 12th Chengdu World Games will be held, with the relay taking place in stages at five venues including the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. In February 2026, the Golden Monkey Pavilion at the base will open to the public.
